ACUPUNCTURE
Traditionally the Chinese believe that when the body’s vital energy is no longer in balance that a person will become diseased. In American medicine, when a disease occurs we look to bacteria and viruses as the causes, but the Chinese believe that the disease itself is only a symptom of a greater imbalance. Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points along the body’s natural energy pathways and channels to regulate and balance this energy bringing the body back into a healthy state.
CUPPING
Cupping is a method of applying acupressure by creating a vacuum next to the patient's skin. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) it involves placing glass, plastic, or bamboo cups on the skin and holding them there with suction. This therapy can be used to treat respiratory diseases and also used to help with back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain. This technique, in varying forms, has also been found in the folk medicine of Vietnam, the Balkans, modern Greece, and Russia, among other places.
NOTE: Cupping can leave red marks upon the skin which usually take 2-4 days to clear.
TAI CHI
Originally a martial art which began in the 10th or 11th century, Tai Chi is now an excellent form of exercise and moving meditation. Known for it's slow, rhythmical, and circular movements made in coordination with breathing, Tai Chi has been proven to help with overall health, balance, stress, and even boosts the immune system.
ACUPRESSURE/TUI NA
Acupressure Massage (also called Tui Na) is the use of massage techniques combined with pressing on Acupuncture points to help restore health. It's highly effective in treating musculoskeletal problems. It's also a great alternative for people who don't like needles, but would like to benefit from Chinese Medicine!
HERBAL MEDICINE
Herbal medicine is the use of Chinese Herbs in a formula designed to both treat the patient's symptoms and complaints as well as bringing about balance and health.
NOTE: Because there is no room at Ridgely Retreat for an Herbal Pharmacy, there will be a delay between the consult and the perscription of herbs.
MOXABUSTION
Moxabustion is an oriental medicine therapy utilizing moxa, or mugwort herb. Suppliers usually age the mugwort and grind it up to a fluff; practitioners burn the fluff or process it further into a stick that resembles a (non-smokable) cigar. They can use it indirectly, with acupuncture needles, or sometimes burn it on a patient's skin. It is especially effective in treating pain and injuries.
CHI KUNG
Sometimes called Daoist Yoga, Chi Kung is a form of meditation focusing on breath work. Often the breath is coordinated with gental stretching movements, but is sometimes practiced while sitting still. There are many mental and spiritual benefits of regular Chi Kung practice.
GUA SHA
Gua Sha involves repeated pressured strokes over skin with a smooth edge. A ceramic Chinese soup spoon, a well worn coin, honed animal bones, water buffalo horn, or even jade scraping devices can be used. A simple metal cap with a rounded edge is commonly used. This technique is excellent for injuries and pain, providing relief by breaking down scar tissue and releasing adhesions. The modern technique called the Grashton Method is quite similar.
NOTE: Like cupping, Gua Sha can leave red marks on the skin which will usually clear within 2-4 days.
MEDITATION
Meditation is a combination of relaxation, connection with breath, and the training of mental focus through quiet contemplation. It has been proven to help with stress and concentration, eliminating unnecessary worry and anxiety.
